Outside the Frame Film Festival

Outside the Frame Film Festival

To close out the Blame It on Art: Creative Mentorship at Outside the Frame exhibition in the Linfield Gallery, Outside the Frame participants will present a spectrum of short films — heartwarming, challenging, informative, and playful — at Delkin Recital Hall in the Vivian Bull Music Center. The youth filmmakers will be available for questions after their presentation. The Linfield Gallery will also be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to view the exhibition before or after the film festival.

EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION:

Come experience the work of Outside the Frame, a Portland nonprofit that teaches filmmaking to homeless youth! Provocative and experimental photography, film, and sculptural works by OTF participants and mentors are featured. The work taps into our collective potentials to use art to heal from trauma, share stories, break barriers and create positive change. The exhibition is open through October 6, 2023.

ABOUT OUTSIDE THE FRAME:

Outside The Frame offers a creative outlet, job skills, an audience and a sense of dignity and possibility

through filmmaking. Because if youth experiencing homelessness can make films, they can do anything. OTF

believes that to thrive, young people need more than their basic needs met. They believe that homeless youth

are our most underestimated citizens. They offer a model educational and vocational program, where young

people create films about issues that matter to them and share them with the public.

BIPOC, LGBTQ+ youth, and people with disabilities are over represented in the homeless youth community

proportional to their representation in the general population. Their program participants are 16–26 years old

and most have experienced homelessness or housing insecurity. In their most recent survey, 80% identified as

LGBTQ+, 77% as BIPOC and 54% as having a disability. Many fled abuse, neglect, addiction and poverty. All are

trying to rebuild their lives.

ABOUT LINFIELD GALLERY:

Linfield Gallery is a vibrant learning laboratory that invites nationally and internationally recognized artists, as

well as emerging artists and Linfield student artists to our space. Solo and group shows, often with artist

residencies, are a part of exhibitions and programing developed to create dialogue and critical thought

through provocative, challenging, and diverse programming. We strive to create an enriching visual experience

for both the Linfield community and the larger community. Follow all the events and activities of the Linfield

Gallery and the Department of Art on Instagram.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The

Gallery will be open until 8 P.M. after the film festival on Oct. 3.

The gallery is located in the James F. Miller Fine Arts Center on the Linfield University campus. To reach the

gallery from 99W, turn east on Keck Drive at the McMinnville Market Center (Albertsons) in south

McMinnville. Turn right at the first street onto Library Court. The gallery is located in the second building on

the left, Building B. Parking is available on the street and in the lot west of Nicholson Library.

Delkin Recital Hall is located in the Vivian Bull Music Center at 57 Keck Drive, near the corner of Lever Street,

on the Linfield University campus. There is ample free parking in the lot east of the building.

SPONSORSHIP: This exhibition is sponsored by the Lacroute Arts Series and the Department of Art. The

Lacroute Arts Series at Linfield University is made possible by the generosity of arts benefactor Ronni Lacroute.

The series, sponsored by the Lacroute Arts Fund at Linfield, is dedicated to helping the University present art

events and activities for the campus and community. It provides programs featuring artists in the areas of

music, art, and theatre.

Panel with filmmakers to follow

——

Rose Solomon, the daughter of refugees from Ethiopia, was working as a Peer Mentor at Outside the Frame when she realized her family's stories needed to be documented.

“In 2019 I experienced homelessness for about 9 months. After I reconnected with my family they started telling me stories because there was a certain level of respect , “Oh, you’ve been on your own journey. I will impart these stories on a level that I know you’ll get because you have walked in my shoes.”

The film was produced through Outside the Frame’s expanding Film Career programming, with the mentorship of Erin Yanke (It Did Happen Here, Arresting Power) and support from the Regional Arts and Culture Council and the Creative Opportunity Program.

Rose says this film is for “anyone who has experienced life as a refugee, anyone who has experienced housing instability, people who want to learn more about their neighbors, and people who like documentary films.”
